Rhiwbina v Llanishen 1st XV 20/09/17

Reasons to be Cheerful Parts 1 2 3

(I woke at 5 am, happy to relive last night so, if I meander, I apologise)

The annual Rhiwbina renewal and yes it tipped down so Noah was in his elements, two parts hydrogen to one of oxygen, for those of you with a scientific mindset.

So to kick off, Llanishen playing with the flow, and it's that man Sam who takes a terrific catch in the air. Promising. Promising, me thinks.

The first Rhiwbina scrum and, what's this, they've driven Rhiwbina off the ball and gone through a number of powerful drives, incorporating a number of back moves. Rhiwbina transgressed at the breakdown and Alex kicked the penalty to put Llanishen in front.

The Lion's forwards were playing as if they hadn't eaten gazelle for a week, hunting as a pack and with great intensity - they were like wildebeests (not the prey).

A series of penetrating runs and great handling drew another penalty which Alex again kicked.

Harry's box kicking and tenacious defence meant Llanishen were in control of the game. A time to worry?

Not a bit of it! A Rhiwbina scrum was driven backwards and Lewis picked up, dummied and ran over for the opening try. Reasons to be cheerful indeed!

Further pressure, exerted by the ravenous pack, brought a further penalty and another three points took the team into a fourteen point lead. As 007 might say, "I must be dreaming." (Application of Sean Connery's accent required)

Rhiwbina then picked up their game and a number of near line breaks were only just dealt with and it was no surprise that Llanishen conceded a penalty in front of their posts.

The successful penalty gave the home fans something to cheer. Was this the start of a comeback?

No the midfield defensive line, Tom and Josh, aided by Jonny, Alex and Sam were shutting down the attacking endeavours of the opposition. They were also able to quickly switch to attack and the handling, on a filthy night, was excellent.

Into the last five minutes and after a series of surging runs the torrent couldn't be halted as a pop-pass released young Sams to score (one in every game this season so far).

So no Blockheads and certainly not a Dury first half.

Half-Time - Rhiwbina 3 Llanishen 19

It is at this point I refer you to the tonal scale. The second half kicked off at 19:10 with a heavy (I weighed it) cloud cover and driving rain - the view to put it mildly was poor.

We started in light near the middle and got about three-quarters of the way to the right hand side.

Ian, therefore, sent the boys out minus scrum caps and wearing   - Bournie?

The sides strove hard but the conditions started to impact on the game but good skills were in evidence.

The front row: Elliot, Mike and Lee drove hard and the scrum was rock solid.

Gwion, George, Noah, Alex and Lewis were harrying and hitting hard at the breakdowns and it was no surprise when, in the last few minutes, the ball broke free. The 'Velcro-Boy (Sam) was on hand to scoop the ball up and score under the posts.

Reasons to be Cheerful Part 2

Cheddar cheese and pickle, the Vincent motorsickle

Woody Allen, Dali, Dimitri and Pasquale
Balabalabala and Volare

Something nice to study, phoning up a buddy
Being in my nuddy (NO NOT YOU MR SEWELL!)

So hit me with a rhythm stick - back to back wins against the squirels.

A well contested game, played in a good spirit, but it's Llanishen move into the next round.

Rhiwbina have made a great start in the league and we wish them well for the remainder of the season.

Final Score - Rhiwbina 3 Llanishen 26

P.S.

So no drey day as the Lions dine on squirrel (chewy with a hint of nut) well scientifically we are further up the food chain, if not the leagues.

Unconfirmed reports are suggesting NASA want to analyse Sam's hands for their stickability in wet conditions.

'George's Good Food Guide' will include Rhiwbina RFC's post match offering - "Always quality."

Gabby's doing well (given up fags) - long may it continue so definitely -
