Abercynon v Llanishen RFC

Pedigree Chum, Anyone?

A right dogs dinner of a game started so well. Bright skies a slight breeze and a firm, wide pitch. What could go wrong? Read on and all will be revealed, well most of it!
Abercynons kick-off didnt go 10 metres ,so we had an opportunity to see how the pack was going to compete in the scrum. Very well, as it happens, and the penalty conceded by Abercynon allowed the team a line-out close to their line.
The ball was won and then a series of phases, during which it looked as if wed score, was brought to a halt by a slap down and a yellow card for Abercynon.
Having been camped in the opposition half it was surely only a matter of time before there was a score. Correct, an interception allowed the skilful and rapid Abercynon left winger to run 70 metres and score under the posts.
Only a blip we thought. Incorrect as an infringement allowed a penalty, which was successfully kicked. Ten points down and wed been in the opposition half for over 80% of the time!
Llanishen pressure continued but a breakdown gave an opportunity for Abercynon to kick and chase and after a few deft kicks they were under the posts for a 17-0 lead.
The farrago continued as the team conceded another try, which wasnt converted.
At this point, the referee went down on his knees, our Firsts will do that to you, but no, hed pulled a calf muscle and had to stop play.
Three Eighths Time: Abercynon 24 Llanishen 0

Discussion time  a new referee need. Apply here. Out of the crowd game a Premier Referee but he wasnt sure if he could referee the game for 40 minute halves. A third referee perhaps for the last 10 minutes?
Further debate but after a phone call the referee was able to guarantee he could stay for the full eighty minutes  game on, best of order.
So after a break of ten minutes or more the game recommenced and whats this? A surging run into the opposition 22,by Noah, gave a great platform and after good drives Harry went over for a try, which Tom converted.
With minimal time to write anything down we were attacking again and after exploiting the open side, Ross went over for a try, which Tom, again, converted.
Half Time: Abercynon 24 Llanishen 14

A series of forward drives, good passing and interplay set The Minotaur, our very own tarw, Adam, to score under the posts. The team was back to within three points, Crazy!
A yellow card for Llanishen created space wide which the pacy back three of Abercynon exploited, creating a well worked try. The missed conversion meant we were eight points down with ten minutes to go.
Good field position was used well and good handling along the backline put Al Sams over in the corner. Three points behind with five minutes to go.
A penalty conceded gave Tom a difficult chance to bring the sides level and, whilst a little squiffy looking, it dropped over the horizontal. A draw?
No, the team conceded and with just about the last kick of the day Abercynon converted the penalty to gain a bonus point win.
Winalot? Well enough to be mid-table and today two points: one for scoring four ties and another for losing by 7 or less.
Barking Mad? Yes it was and a game the team should have won. It was enough to make one feel rabid and succumb to distemper. There is, however, always next week and a chance to reach the Mallett Cup Semi-Final as we take on Cardiff Quins. Come on our very own Diamond Dogs, well Friendly Hound Dogs!

There were a number of positives with the forwards playing well in the loose and at the set pieces and none more so than Will Evans who had another outstanding match, following on from Heol y Cyw last week.
Also the news had already filtered through, well via WhatsApp, that the Seconds had continued their unbeaten start to the season. The team are top of the league and have developed a real camaraderie, scoring tries for fun, top stuff lads.
The team play Pentyrch in the Ninian Stuart next week  good luck lads  a League and Cup double, perchance.
