Match Report Porth Harlequins v Llanishen

Porth Game Raises Interesting Point

Back to philosophy and a question to boot.
Would you rather win playing badly or lose playing well? Discuss at your leisure.

The sun was shining and the Welsh valley was resplendent in various shades of green. On top of that a rather wonderful selection of music was playing over the speakers, so what could spoil it?

Kick-off time and a knock-on gave the Porth pack a chance to demonstrate their power. The penalty conceded led to a kick to touch and a five metre lineout.
A catch and drive led to a try, after two minutes, and the conversion put the team on the back foot. Time for the Llanishen faithful to start fretting!
Well no, the scrum tightened up and the team was putting together a number of attacking phases. Using packs and forwards cleverly and playing what of the cuff made it an enjoyable five minutes.

The pressure on the Porth line was relentless and after a penalty was conceded, Tom kicked it to bring the side onto the scoreboard.
The following kick off was cleared and Porth started to put some pace on the ball and were looking to spin the ball wide. The Llanishen defence, however, was excellent and often attacking players were driven back behind the gain line.
It was from robust defence that an attempted pass was intercepted and a footrace was on. Sam, on debut, pinned his ears back, dont try that at home kids, and scored under the posts. The conversion put Llanishen into a three point lead.
Porth then had a good period of possession and after a penalty was conceded the scores were tied.
The game had a real energy to it and was enjoyable viewing. A little humour I hear you say, well a little giggle was provided when Tom launched a kick to touch and with military precision smashed into his own car. Told you it was only a giggle, you had to be there.
The Llanishen team were stringing numerous passages of play and creating half chances which, unfortunately werent converted.

Half Time Porth Harlequins 10 Llanishen 10

So, having received a mint from a Porth fan, the second half began. Two minutes in and all the possession and attacking had been done by Llanishen. An awarded penalty tantalisingly drifted wide of the posts, robbing Llanishen of a vital lead.
Eight minutes in, and a well drilled Porth pack drove over the line to retake the lead.
Llanishen were still attacking from deep and demonstrating good skills and were rewarded with a penalty. The kick, from 40 metres, was right on line but, despite the blowing of the Lions fans, hit the crossbar and bounced clear.
The team continued to press but increasingly Porth had a greater share of the ball. It was, therefore, no surprise when they scored their third try. The well drilled Porth pack were again instrumental in its execution and with fifteen minutes left it would have been easy for heads to drop.
To the Llanishen teams credit this didnt happen and they went close to snatching a second try. It wasnt to be but without doubt it was the best performance of the season and one everyone at the club could be proud of.

P.S.
It was a pleasure to watch a game and hold convivial conversations with opposing fans and this added to a great afternoon of rugby. I even had time to help a grandmother with a wordsearch, well when someone gives you a mint you feel obliged, dont you!

Apologies for a lack of Barry report, my Mother-in-Law passed away on the morning of the match and mirth was in short supply. She loved watching her grandsons playing for the Mini and Juniors and lately the senior teams.
A proud English woman who loved the passion her grandchildren displayed to their Welsh roots. The Wales versus England games will never be the same again. Rest in peace Shirley Williams.
